Using custom Content Management System (CMS) or Open Source, without any doubt, is one of the most common points to consider at the beginning stage of a website project.
There are many articles and discussions available in internet, highlighting pros and cons for each case, and the most popular conclusion is – if you don’t really need something special, then go for open source. This is actually a valid statement for most of the time, given the condition that one really determines in advance what degree of customization will be needed until the end of the project and understands if it would require a special customization. This could be as simple as changing a design element, or more complicated such as adding a separate module for a different functionality.
No matter what the desired customization is, it is frustrating to find out in the middle of the project that a change cannot be implemented due to limitations of Open Source CMS. Making the correct decision on this, at the beginning of the project, requires either software knowledge or guidance from an expert.
Related to this issue, we have some good news to share – We as SW Experts, recently delivered a website using the CMS that we have developed.
Actually, the website is rather a simple one with corporate company layout and focus on the products and from this point of view, at the beginning there was not any extraordinary functionality added with the usage of a custom CMS (again, other than the ones intensively discussed on the internet).
However, having determined our client’s needs clearly from the start, and after the testing period to ensure functionality of our CMS, now we are developing a backend module enabling integration of distributors, stock control, generation of invoices, user rights management, order management and reporting – which would either be impossible to customize according to the needs of our client in case of using an open source CMS or would have been incredibly painful and more costly.
We are very happy to have the first website implemented with our CMS and for the fact that we have made the correct decision at the start of the project enabling us to support our client in the long-term.
