Google Glass could soon become New York Police Department’s newest crime fighting tool.
The NYPD is currently weighing the benefits of equipping its officers with Google’s latest creation and is considering how the new technology could help lock up bad guys, a law enforcement source told Venturebeat.com.
“We signed up, got a few pairs of the Google glasses, and we’re trying them out, seeing if they have any value in investigations, mostly for patrol purposes,” the source told the tech Website.
“We’re looking at them, you know, seeing how they work.”
The glasses, which have yet to hit the market for public consumption, are currently only available through the tech giant’s Glass Explorer Program, which allows organizations to beta-test the new specs for a price of $1,500, according to Google’s Website.
A Google spokesman told Venturebeat that it is not working directly with law enforcement agencies to test Google Glass’ crime fighting potential, but stressed that the Explorer program is open to anyone who wants to apply.
“The Google Glass Explorer program includes people from all walks of life, including doctors, firefighters and parents,” the spokesman told Venturebeat. “Anyone can sign up to become a Glass Explorer, provided he or she is a US resident and over the age of 18.”
The high-tech glasses could potentially give NYPD cops facial recognition capabilities as well the ability to match suspects names with those contained in databases used by various law enforcement agencies.
“We think it could help impact patrol operations in New York City,” told the Website. “We shall see.”
